A football on the lawn, like every football the world over: a simple bag of wind which is forever drawing attention to itself, inviting us to play. Albert George (19252009), someone dear to me, ex-centre forward (Cambridge United, 1950s) once commented on the modern game: "But Mark, it's a game of eleven people kicking a bag of wind one way up a pitch, and a bunch of eleven men trying to kick it the opposite way. It's a simple game, a beautiful game, and most of these modern complications, commentors, so-called experts... well, they miss the point."
